In 1979, SOMA (Asturias miners' union) decided to organize a twinning party in Rodiezmo with their Leonese co-workers. Since then, and especially following the electoral victory of the PSOE in 1982 , the party became a symbol of worker socialism. During the last 33 years, historic leaders of the Socialist Party have paraded through the Leonese town: from Alfonso Guerra to José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, including Javier Solana, Josep Borrell, Txiki Benegas and Francisco Fernández Marugán. As El Confidencial Digital has learned , the alliance of Asturian miners' unions, UGT-SOMA-FITAG, sent a letter to the City Council in the middle of this month to communicate that the mining concentration, which was held on the first Sunday in September, has been canceled this year. Different versions of the decision The power plants' decision has not left the residents of the Leonese town indifferent, nor have it left union representatives and workers in the mining sector indifferent. Not many explanations have been given about the reasons that caused the cessation of this event. ECD has contacted SOMA, the City Council, and the national federation of UGT-FITAG to find out the explanations offered by each one.
They are the following: -- From the Union of Mining Workers of Asturias they assure that the only reason why the Rodiezmo party has been canceled is the economic and sector situation: "No other external agent has i Special Database nfluenced it because it is a call for unions for workers and unionists , regardless of whether people from the PSOE came or not.” -- For the City Council , however, there is a more political motivation in the decision. A senior official from the council, who has maintained contacts with the organizers of the event, explains that there is no “understanding” between SOMA and UGT . The Asturian miners' union is opposed to the current leadership of the PSOE , led by Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba. He did not want to organize an event that promoted the current socialist leaders. -- From the national federation of UGT-FITAG they assure that the decision was made by SOMA: "we found out after the fact . " Regarding the Asturian union's supposed rejection of the current PSOE executive, the FITAG source consulted has assured that "there is something of that . " The party lost followers after Zapatero's goodbye Regardless of the reasons that led to the suppression of the festival, the truth is that, in the last two years, the concentration had been losing steam.
And not only due to the lack of resources caused by spending on the mining marches carried out at this time against the loss of aid to the sector. From the City Council, which has official data on the attendance at these events in recent years, they explain to ECD that, since Zapatero's departure , the unions have lost the power to convene. The data from the consistory are as follows. In 2009 , the last time the former president of the Government attended, 33,000 people came to Rodiezmo . That concentration will be remembered for the 'Internacional' chant by Zapatero along with ministers Aído and Pajín, with his fist raised. In 2010, Zapatero decided not to attend because a general strike had been called two weeks later. In 2011 , months before the general elections, attendance figures dropped to 18,000 attendees . Last year, Rubalcaba rejected the unions' invitation . Only 12,000 people attended the rally .
