Brazil is the third country with the highest level of electronic fraud. According to a survey by the Global Fraud Report and The Economist Intelligence Unit , from The Economist magazine , % of Brazilian companies reported having had problems with cybercriminals. The world champion is China, with % of companies affected, followed by Colombia, with a % incidence of fraud.
The country also surpasses all regions in three types of fraud: information theft, with an incidence in % of companies; contract fraud, affecting % of companies; and money laundering, with a % incidence.
The report was requested by the North-American consultancy Kroll, specialized in risk management. The research found that the theft of electronic information and data in global companies has surpassed physical theft for the first time. In Brazil, the incidence of information theft went from % in to % this year.

According to the executive director of Kroll's São Paulo office, Eduardo Gomide, information theft was the biggest concern among Brazilian executives. The report also pointed out that Brazilian companies are less committed compared to the average in other countries to combat fraud, as few invest in IT security. For Vander Giordano, executive director of Kroll in São Paulo, the consequences for Brazilian companies that do not take measures could be more compromising and costly. “It is more economical to invest in preventive measures than to act after the damage has been caused. Fraudsters always think of new ways to commit their crimes.”
Younger employees and senior management were found to be the most likely perpetrators of fraud at % each, followed by agents or others at mid-levels at %. The proportion of fraud committed by these workers was % to % in North America, Europe and Asia and % in the Middle East and Africa. The number fell to % in Latin America, where fraud cases are more concentrated in customer relationships.
