Like many in this profession, I ended up in SEO by accident. Back then, in 2007, I had just graduated from college and still had a vague idea of what I would end up doing. I sent my resume to the largest SEO company at the time, and after a couple of weeks I called and asked why no one was answering me. The manager who hired me often recalled this impudence
Already being an optimizer, at one of the interviews held in our company, I heard the following phrase: “I just love the Russian language and mathematics, so I decided to become an optimizer.” The same can be said about me.
About how it was before and how it is now
To say that promoting websites 10 years ago was easier is to say nothing. It was enough to make simple manipulations with texts, run them through catalogs, buy links, and after a couple of updates the site would be at the top.
From the funny:
The website of company N was promoted by content writing service
the query "transport and logistics company". But the text that said "transport and logistics company N..." was not approved because the company was a transport company, not a transport and logistics company. But, as they say, you can't throw keywords out of a contract. Then they simply changed the wording in the text to something like "...unlike other transport and logistics companies, company N...". And this helped bring the query into the top 10!
Now the volume of work and the level of necessary competencies are much higher. An SEO specialist must have at least minimal skills in web analytics, usability, have an idea of typography and other related areas.
Jokes and tales about optimizers
Most jokes about SEOs are all kinds of search spam (using words and phrases that are inappropriate in the context of the text that are needed to match the search queries of users), for example:
How many SEOs are needed to screw in an incandescent light bulb; lighting fixtures installation;
An SEO specialist goes to a bar, restaurant, buy alcoholic drinks, clubs, the best bars in Moscow, order a banquet in a restaurant.
Or here is one of my favorites:
news
In general, the comments directed at optimizers are often not the most flattering. Designers and interface developers are especially biased towards my colleagues. Lebedev, for example, in one of his posts on LiveJournal compares an SEO specialist to a pick-up artist.
By and large, the reason for disagreements is that an optimizer is rarely involved at the site design stage. In almost 99% of cases, the optimizer gets the site in the state in which it was conceived by a person who has nothing to do with SEO. Something has to be changed, and the designers really don’t like it. But in order to level out disagreements, it is enough to involve an SEO specialist in the creation of the site structure and filter architecture in time.
About Professional Deformation
As in any profession, SEOs develop and display special character traits that are transmitted to life situations unrelated to work. First of all, professional deformation is expressed in the ability to quickly adapt to changes in existing rules. The environment in which one has to work is constantly changing: new opportunities and restrictions appear from year to year. What was an innovation and a bold experiment yesterday has become standard practice today.
The manifestation of professional deformation is also expressed in the desire for systematization, attention to detail. And SEOs, as a rule, have a very good memory.
About career growth
I had to go all the way from an assistant optimizer to a senior specialist in the department, and then continue as the head of the SEO department in another company. Soon I realized that managing is not my thing. I did not like the changes that were happening to me: a functional attitude towards people and a loss of interest in the work that had brought pleasure for many years. On the contrary, working as a specialist is inspiring. Despite the technical focus, there is scope for experimentation and an element of unpredictability. This greatly dilutes the routine.
Working with completely different topics, you learn a lot of new things. Agree, not every girl understands the differences between wall and load-bearing corrugated sheets, understands the range of fasteners, navigates the huge list of dental diseases and knows that the best wood for log houses is produced in the winter. I always said that an optimizer in retirement will be able to solve a crossword puzzle of any complexity
Now I work in one of the best SEO companies: interesting projects and ambitious tasks, high level of specialists, mutual assistance and readiness to attract any resources to achieve the set goals. And of course, an incredibly cheerful team and off-the-scale corporate parties in terms of atmosphere! When work brings pleasure - it's cool!
